The redevelopment of Ameenee Magu – one of the main roads of the congested Maldivian capital - is set to begin on August 30, confirms Road Development Corporation (RDC)’s managing director Moosa Ali Manik (Mookay).

The redevelopment of Ameenee Magu is part of the Male’ Streetscaping Project.

Mookay told Sun on Tuesday evening that RDC was currently engaged in lastminute preparations to begin work on redevelopment of Ameenee Magu.

“We are working on acquiring the machinery, equipment and workers needed for the work. Survey work is nearly complete,” he said.

Mookay said Ameenee Magu would be redeveloped as a pleasant road. He said RDC would try to avoid removing any trees on the street.

“We will try to avoid touching any of the trees in Ameenee Magu, and will not remove any trees unless absolutely necessary,” he said.

The street is set to be redeveloped with asphalt.

Mookay asked people to be patient with the inconvenience they may incur once the project begins.

He said RDC will plan the work in a manner that does not inconvenience the schools on the street.

“I acknowledge there will be some major inconvenience with the road redevelopment project, for the people who live on Ameenee Magu and the people you use the street. I hope everyone will be patient,” he said.

The redevelopment of Ameenee Magu was contracted to RDC by Planning Ministry on July 3.

Under the project, valued at MVR 84.4 million, RDC will develop 7.1 kilometers of asphalt road, install a storm drain system, and install street lights.

The company is required to complete the project within 210 days.

The decision by the government to take the project from Male’ City Council and contract it to RDC sparked criticism. Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu warned he would lodge a case with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), alleging the decision involved corruption.
