The suspect arrested for robbing a Bangladeshi worker by posing as immigration officer has been remanded in custody of the police for 10 days.

The robbery, involving three people who impersonated immigration officers to enter an accommodation block for expatriate workers in Male’ to steal from them, was reported to the police on Monday. They stole a mobile phone and MVR 9,000 from a Bangladeshi worker living there.

The police have arrested one of the suspects, who was identified as Mohamed Naveen, 44, G. Beruge, K. Male’.

He was presented before the Criminal Court for his remand hearing on Tuesday. The court ordered for him to be remanded in custody of the police for 10 days.

At the hearing, Naveen claimed his innocence.

He said that he does metalwork at an empty lot in Male’ City, and often recruits his friends for such projects.

Naveen said that on Monday, he was waiting outside the accommodation block when the people he recruited to take part in the work went into the building and then ran out. He said that he too walked away after they rushed out. He said that this is clear from the CCTV footage.

Naveen said that he was home when the police came and asked if he knew certain individuals. He said that he told the police he did, explained to the police what happened, and also helped the police to try and find them.

He also told the court that he has no prior arrest record for such a crime and that he is a caretaker for someone who is ill.

However, the police told the court that they believe Naveen had been involved in the robbery and that the CCTV footage shows Naveen fleeing the scene of the crime.

The police also told the court that Naveen has a record for prior arrests.

The police submitted CCTV footage and the victim’s statement as evidence against Naveen.

The police have yet to arrest the other suspects involved in the robbery.
