Mugger confesses to snatching necklace; agrees to compensate victim

A man arrested for snatching a gold necklace off a female motorcyclist earlier this month has confessed to the crime, and agreed to compensate the victim.

The incident took place on December 19 in the Alikilegefaanu Magu of Male’ City. Hassan Isam, 30, V. Fiyabari, K. Male’, was arrested in connection to the case the next day. The Criminal Court initially remanded him in custody of the police for seven days, and then extended his remand again on Saturday.

Court documents show Isam confessed to the mugging. He also told the court that he no longer has the stolen necklace, but was ready to compensate the victim for the loss.

He also agreed to cooperate with investigators.

During his remand hearing on Saturday, the court extended Isam’s remand by 15 days.

CCTV footage shows Isam following a female motorcyclist on his motorbike and attempt to snatch a necklace off her neck. Following this unsuccessful first attempt, Isam leaves his motorbike on the road and rushes towards the woman, who abandons her motorbike in the middle of the road in an attempt to escape him.

However, he snatches the necklace off her neck, and appears to attempt to snatch her handbag as well. However, the woman fights him off and rushes into an alleyway. He is seen making a quick escape on his motorbike as other motorcyclist stop at the scene.

Court documents show Isam has an extensive criminal record.

His current remand period expires on January 12.
