Man under house arrest breaks into shop, steals phones

A man who was sentenced by the court to serve a sentence under house arrest has broken into a shop and stolen five phones.

Police said they received a report of a burglary ‘Spy & Tech’ mobile shop in Maafannu district at approximately 4:00am on Thursday.

They identified the suspect arrested in the case as Azmeel Mohamed, 40, Bulbulge, R. Meedhoo.

Police said they found five phones suspected to have been stolen from the shop when they searched Azmeel following arrest.

As per the authority, Azmeel was sentenced to five months and 22 days in house arrest by the Criminal Court on November 5th after he was found guilty of stealing from ‘Craves Takeaway’.

It was noted that he had been arrested on 59 previous occasions in various cases. They include theft, robbery and drug abuse.

Azmeel was remanded in custody by the Criminal Court for 15 days when presented for a remand hearing in connection to the ‘Spy & Tech’ mobile shop burglary, Police added. 

Theft and robbery cases remain prevalent in the Maldivian society. Criminal Court has recently remanded an individual suspected of stealing two laptops and two iphones to 15 days in custody.
