Yazeed Mohamed, who served as the commissioner general of taxation during former Maldivian president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration, has been nominated for the same position again by the new administration.

The post of commissioner general of taxation became vacant after Fathuhulla Jameel – who was appointed to the position in 2019 – resigned last month.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had sent his nominations for the position to the Parliament on Wednesday. The nominees were selected from among candidates who responded to an open application, and were ranked based on the president’s preference.

In addition to Yazeed, the president also nominated Hassan Zareer, who had served as Yazeed’s deputy during Yameen’s administration.

Both Yazeed and Zareer had lost their positions following a 2019 amendment to the Taxation Act.

Yazeed was replaced a month later by Fathuhulla, who tendered his resignation on February 1, after the MDP administration lost the 2023 presidential election to PPM-PNC.

The PPM-PNC administration opened applications for the vacancy on February 20.

The names of the nominees have been set to the Parliament’s Economic Committee for vetting.

According to the law, tax commissioner appointments require parliamentary approval.
