President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has honest intentions, says Abdul Raheem Abdulla, PNC’s chairperson and special advisor to the president, adding that he must be allowed to fulfil his duties without getting pestered.
Abdul Raheem, who is accompanying President Muizzu on his current tour of southern Maldives, made the remarks while addressing a gathering in Fuvahmulah City on Monday night.
Speaking at the gathering, Abdul Raheem said the democratic system in Maldives allows the Parliament to “tie up the president’s hands and feet.”
He said that it should not be allowed in a presidential system of government, and that lawmakers must not be allowed to “pester” the president.
Abdul Raheem said that the Maldivian people have charged President Muizzu with important responsibilities, and that they must now facilitate the chance for him to fulfill those responsibilities.
He said the people needed to give the main ruling PNC a supermajority in the next Parliament.
“I do not believe there should be room to pester the president who is serving the people. Therefore, we need a supermajority in the Parliament,” he said.
“Even if you charge someone with a responsibility, he cannot fulfill that responsibility unless he is given a chance to do so.”
Abdul Raheem said that President Muizzu has proven that he has honest intentions.
He also thanked the residents of Fuvahmulah City for voting for President Muizzu in the 2023 presidential elections, saying that the city had shown the need for a change in the Maldives, and the desire for a leader who understands the people’s sentiments.
