IAC Maldives raises MVR 9 million to help Turkey-Syria quake victims

International Aid Campaign (IAC) Maldives has received over MVR 9 million in donations from Maldivians to assist the victims of the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria last month.

IAC had partnered with NGOs to conduct fund raising activities across Maldives.

IAC’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Azhad Mohamed told Sun on Thursday that they continue to provide aid to the victims of the earthquake.

“We continue to provide aid,” he said.

Azhad said that in addition to cash, IAC is also working on providing container homes – which will have two rooms and a toilet. The organization plans on sending 30 container homes.

IAC is also working on sending two tons of rice to Turkey and Syria.

IAC has been distributing daily food parcels and clothes to the victims of the earthquake.

The 7.8 magnitude earth quake struck 23 kilometers east of Nurdagi, in Turkey’s Gaziantep province, at a depth of 24.1 kilometers on February 6.

A series of aftershocks reverberated through the region in the immediate hours after the initial incident. A magnitude 6.7 aftershock followed 11 minutes after the first earthquake hit, but the largest temblor, which measured 7.5 in magnitude, struck about nine hours later. More than 125 aftershocks have been recorded so far.

The combined death toll from the earthquakes has risen to over 50,000.
