Men accused of attacking MP Jabir released from custody

Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir (C) travels to AA. Mathiveri on September 21, 2021.

The two suspects arrested for allegedly attacking Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir in a visit to AA. Mathiveri last September have been released from police custody.

According to local residents who spoke to Sun, Jabir was attacked by a group of angry young men when he travelled to Mathiveri on September 21.

Jabir was taken into protective custody by the police in response to the incident.

Two suspects - identified as a 19-year-old male and a 42-year-old male – were arrested in connection to the case on September 22.

A police spokesperson told Sun this Sunday that the suspects were released from custody after their 7-day remand period ordered by the court expired last Saturday.

Following the incident in Mathiveri, an angry Jabir claimed at a parliamentary sitting that there were members of the international terror network ISIS operating in Mathiveri, and that it was not safe for any Maldivian to travel to the island.

Jabir also asked for security from Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) in response to the incident.

MNDF provides security services to parliamentarians upon request.
