Elections Commission (EC) has granted permission for the formation of a new political party by the name of Ihlaastheri Party Maldives.

The party’s founder, Mohamed Ismail had previously applied to form the party under the name Karishma Party. However, the application was rejected as ‘Karishma’ is a Hindi name.

Mohamed Ismail had applied to form Karishma Party as early as 2019, but later withdrew the application.

EC recently granted approval for the formation of two political parties; Maldives National Party (MNP) – led by Dhangethi MP Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim, and National Solidarity Party (MSP) – led by Abdulla Kamaluddin.

MNP has secured the required number of members and has applied for official registration.

The leading parties in Maldives are Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), People’s National Congress (PNC), Jumhoory Party (JP), Adhaalath Party (AP), Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).
