R. Inguraidhoo placed under monitoring mechanisms

National Emergency Operations Center has announced that the island of R. Inguraidhoo has been placed under monitoring mechanisms in connection with the cluster of cases identified from the Amaazu boat (AMZ cluster).

Speaking in a press conference tonight, NEOC medical officer Dr. Ibrahim Afzal stated that monitoring mechanisms were placed on the island after a connection was established with the passenger boat.

The passenger boat Amaazu had traveled to several islands in the north of Maldives on April 15-16, before an order restricting travel in the country was imposed.

The boat’s captain, a 49-year old local male from the island of Sh. Narudhoo had tested positive for the virus last Saturday. The positive case led the authorities to place several islands in the north of the country under restrictive measures.

Authorities have warned that the case could lead to new clusters being formed in different islands. Eight people, including the captain of the boat, have so far tested positive for the virus from Narudhoo, while one case has been confirmed in the island of Milandhoo in the same atoll.
