Masked robbers broke into MTCC Tower through adjacent building

Robbers broke into the finance department of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in the early morning hours of this Sunday and stole approximately MVR 80,000.

The MTCC Tower, which houses the administrative departments of the State-owned company, is located in front of the Fishermen’s Park in Boduthakurufaanu Magu of Male’ City.

Maldives Police Service reports the agency was alerted to the robbery at 8:18 am, but declined to disclose any details.

Managing Director of MTCC, Hassan Shah reports the amount of money stolen during the robbery is estimated to be close to MVR 80,000.

The robbers broke into the tower at 3:40 am. And were caught on CCTV footage.

“Approximately MVR 80,000 [was stolen]. It was the insurance money and petty cash from yesterday. And some additional cash,” said Shah.

He reports the robbers were wearing masks and gloves. They had first entered the adjacent construction site to the west of the MTCC Tower, and entered the Tower by breaking in through a window located on the fifth floor.

“They entered by climbing the [adjacent] building and breaking in through a window located on the fifth floor of the MTCC Tower. They were wearing transparent gloves. They were caught on camera,” said Shah.

He reports that the robbers, in addition to stealing the cash, also stole the laptop used by MTCC’s Chief Finance Officer, Mohamed Hilmy.

572 robberies have been reported to Maldives Police Service this year; 243 robberies this February alone.
