Power back in Hulhumale’ after two-hour outage; extra half-hour wait until fully restored in Male’

Power has been restored to Hulhumale’ after another blackout hit the Maldivian capital on Saturday, with the state utility service estimating it will take around another half-an-hour to fully restore electricity to Male’ City.

The power went out in the capital just before 09:30 am on Saturday. The State Electric Company (STELCO) attributed the outage to a “technical issue”, the details of which have yet to be disclosed.

At around 10:17 am, STELCO announced that power had been restored to some parts of Hulhumale’ and Male’. And at around 11:30 am, the company announced that power had been fully restored to Hulhumale’.

STELCO said that it was preparing to synchronize the Greater Male’ Interconnection Grid in order to fully restore power to Male’.

“Energy will be fully restored to Male’ in about 40 minutes. We apologize for the inconvenience,” said the company.

The latest outage comes two months after a total blackout in the capital that lasted nearly six hours.

The blackout on June 1 prompted President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to order a police investigation. However, the findings of this investigation were never publicly disclosed.
