President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Friday, has announced the government’s decision to designate several islands exclusively for the development of halal tourism.
The announcement was made via a post on social media platform, X, on Friday.
In his post, the President underscored that the Maldivian tourism industry is one renowned across the globe that remains a model or sustainability, visitor experience and hospitality.
He added that the Maldives is now embarking on being a leader and a benchmark in halal tourism.

He detailed that the initiative would be accompanied by substantial incentives for investors, aiming to diversify and enhance the Maldives’ tourism offerings.
President Muizzu said Tourism Ministry will unveil further details of the plan in the coming week. He reaffirmed that the Maldives remains open to investment and welcomes investors from across the globe.
“Maldives remains investment ready, and ready to welcome investors from across the globe,” he said.
President Muizzu has held discussions on developing halal tourism in the Maldives during his visit to Malaysia in April. The former administration has also conducted various campaigns to promote halal tourism.
Maldives’ economy is entirely dependent on its tourism industry.
The current administration initially planned to conduct halal tourism via Hajj Corporation by developing guesthouses in K. Maafushi. However, the plan was dropped after Finance Minister Moosa Zameer advised against it.
