President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has rejected criticism that he has been making pledges on a whim during his tours, insisting that he makes all his decisions following discussion and based on plans.

The remarks come after President Muizzu was seen making several pledges in response to notes passed to him by children during his recent tours of the atolls. This has led to accusations that he has been making pledges without any foresight, based merely on a whim.

Addressing a rally in HA. Muraidhoo on Tuesday morning – the first stop in his current tour of HA. Atoll – President Muizzu said that the purpose of his visits it to hear about the developmental needs of islands directly from the people, and to ensure the swift delivery of his pledges.

He said that the allegations by some that he has been making pledges without any planning or consultation simply isn’t true.

“I say this because some people have been criticizing the fact that I have been promising to fulfil the requests people I meet during these visits make. Because I explain how I will fulfill it. They say that we are making promises without any planning or a budget,” he said.

“No. That is not the case. I have always been transparent with regard to the affairs of the government. All my campaign pledges have been compiled into a book. Its clear for all to see. I reveal how the government operates in various meetings and in various documents.”

President Muizzu said that he has repeatedly explained the reasons the government had been unable to carry out projects at the speed it wished last year – economic constraints and inadequate budget allocations.

He said that this year will see projects being rolled out at a swift pace.

During his visit to Muraidhoo, he oversaw the laying of the foundation for a police station and a new council secretariat building in the island.

He also oversaw the signing of an agreement between the Muraidhoo Council and the Bank of Maldives (BML) to build an ATM center in the island.
