President says special focus on promoting handball this year

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said on Thursday that his administration will pay special focus on promoting handball nationwide this year.

He made the remark in an address in R. Kinolhas on Thursday morning – as part of his ongoing tour of R. Atoll.

Addressing a rally in Kinolhas, President Muizzu said that handball has emerged as one of the most popular sports in the Maldives in recent years.

He said that this year’s budget will be utilized to support the development of the sport.

“There is a great interest across the Maldives towards the development of handball. We are paying special focus on this sport this year. To establish facilities for this sport through an expansive system,” he said.

President Muizzu provided assurance that the administration will conduct projects this year and the next in order to fulfill Kinolhas’ developmental needs.

“I am here to assure you that I will fulfill this island’s developmental needs in the real sense,” he said, adding that he will fulfill many of his pledges this year.

President Muizzu said many of the children waiting in line to greet him in Kinolhas shared their concerns with him, including the lack of access to a public park for them to play in.

He named developing public parks in all residential islands as one of his “special policies.”

Pledges made to Kinolhas:

  • The development of a public park this year
  • The completion of a futsal field and a volleyball court this year
  • Upgrade of school facilities
  • Upgrade of healthcare services

President Muizzu said that he wishes to see the launch of local tourism in Kinolhas, as desired by a number of the island’s residents. He promised his full support for the invitiative.
