Criminal Court has ordered the remand of an individual who went to collect a post package containing 980 grams of drugs that was registered under the name of an inmate imprisoned at Dhoonidhoo Custodial.
The individual has been identified as a 40-year-old Maldivian man. He was remanded in custody for 20 days. The court order read that the suspect has prior criminal record in drug-related cases.
He stands accused of using and trafficking drugs.
As per the court order, the post package he went to collect was under the name of an inmate imprisoned at Dhoonidhoo Prison at that time. A total of 980 grams of drugs were seized from the package.
The court order read that the Investigating Officer, during the remand hearing, affirmed that the investigation into the case will be completed and charges will be requested from the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG Office) next week. Meanwhile, the defense appealed for the shortest period of time to complete the investigation in order to expedite the case.
Sufficient evidence had been submitted against the suspect to raise suspicions regarding accusations against him, said the court. They include statements from police officers who attended the scene, drug test report and urine sample report of the suspect.
The court said it was remanding the suspect in custody for the safety and security of the society.
