The Local Government Authority (LGA) has asked the Gadhdhoo Council to investigate and take action against the council’s president Mohamed Ahmed over defamatory remarks he allegedly made against President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
LGA has sent a letter to the Gadhdhoo Council demanding action against Mohamed Ahmed over the alleged use of “vulgar language” against President Muizzu and other top government officials in messages sent to a WhatsApp group.
Gadhdhoo councilor Ali Shareef confirmed the receipt of the letter to Sun on Thursday morning.
He said that the allegation was based on a discussion held regarding a six-month delay in government approval to develop a pre-school in Gadhdhoo.
He said that the council does not understand why the remarks were labelled as “vulgar language” and does not believe it requires for Mohamed Ahmed to be penalized.
“This council does not believe we need to take action against the council president, or even can take action against him in this situation. We believe that everyone has the right to speak freely. Perhaps it would have been more appropriate to take action against the entire council rather than the president himself,” he said.
Shareef believes that the allegation is “absurd”.
The demand by the LGA to penalize a councilor for remarks he made has been criticized by the opposition as an infringement on the right to freedom of expression.
