Sinohydro Corporation - a state-owned Chinese engineering and construction company – has been contracted to build 1,000 social housing units in B. Eydhafushi.

The agreement was signed in a ceremony attended by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu at the President’s Office on Saturday morning.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the Maldivian government by Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib. It follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both parties on May 8.

Muthalib said that the project would comprise three 15-storey towers, featuring 336 three-bedroom and 772 two-bedroom flats.

He said that Eydhafushi would emerge as a key developmental hub among the urban centers being developed across the Maldives.

“The main reason we decided to conduct this project is because Eydhafushi has been selected as one of islands the government plans to develop as an urban center. When we looked at how we can utilize Eydhafushi’s lands, we found that adding land cannot be done. Hence, we found vertical development to be important,” he said.

Muthalib noted that Eydhafushi is surrounded by resorts. He said that the housing units would provide accommodation for those working in Eydhafushi and the neighboring resorts.

Muthalib expects that once the housing units are built, it will boost the island’s population, create jobs, and also boost the number of local workers in neighboring resorts.
