The Parliament on Wednesday voted in approval of appointing Fathimath Ameeza as the new Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation.

Ameeza had been up against incumbent Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation Asma Shafeeq for the role.

President’s Office had opened applications for the post on October 3, with Asma’s term set to expire on October 31. Both Asma and Ameeza had applied for the role. While they were nominated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, he indicated a preference for Ameeza in his letter to the Parliament, which was read on October 23.

The Parliament, which the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) hold a supermajority in, sided with President Muizzu’s choice.

Ameeza received the Parliament’s approval with a unanimous vote of 64 on Wednesday afternoon.

She will need to be formally appointed by President Muizzu before she can assume her new role.

The term of a Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation is five years.
