President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is scheduled to travel to the United States to attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The announcement was made by Heena Waleed, the chief spokesperson at the President’s Office, in a press briefing on Thursday afternoon.

According to Heena, in addition to delivering remarks at the UNGA, he will also participate in a special open debate at the UN Security Council.

“I note that this will be the first time a Maldivian President participates in a debate at the UN Security Council,” she said.

She said that President Muizzu is also scheduled to attend the Summit of the Future on the sidelines of UNGA.

He will also deliver a speech to students at Princeton University.

However, Heena did not say when President Muizzu will leave for the UNGA, which opened in New York on September 10 and will continue until September 30.

The open debate at the Security Council – one of the UN’s most powerful organs – is scheduled for September 25. The theme for the debate is “maintenance of international peace and security: leadership for peace”.
