Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla said on Tuesday evening that he will defend any attack directed at President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

He made the remarks during an interview on a SanguTV program, where Abdul Raheem promised to defend the current administration.

In the SanguTV interview, Abdul Raheem stated he will remain firm on the same political ideology without deterrence.

“I will remain firm on my political ideals. Which are the same ideals with which I joined the parliament in 2009, and I remain firm upon those ideals. The leaders are the ones to abandon me, always. President Maumoon left me, but stood beside Yameen with the same principles,” Abdul Raheem said.

The Parliament Speaker heavily criticized former President Abdul Yameen Abdul Gayoom during his interview. According to Abdul Raheem, he defended and sacrificed the most for the former head of state.

Abdul Raheem further said that he stands beside incumbent president Dr. Mohamed Muizzu while remaining firm on his ideals.

“I say this with daring, any attack aimed at President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will have to first pass through me. I am with President Muizzu to that extent,” the Speaker added.

Speaking in this regard, Abdul Raheem stated he will always remain allegiant to his leaders and will continue to do so. He further assured to defend the current administration, and claimed President Muizzu will be the first to secure a second term since the current Constitution was enforced.

Besides founding and leading the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) as its Chairperson, Abdul Raheem is also the closest ally of President Muizzu and also lead the efforts to elect the current head of state.

The Speaker had been the closest confidante of Yameen for years, and lead multiple political movements as allies. However, during the presidential election last year, Abdul Raheem chose to endorse Dr. Muizzu for presidency over Yameen after which the relations between Abdul Raheem and the former president continued to sour.

Since then, the former allies have become bitter political rivals with frequent verbal exchanges between them in various political rallies.
