The government plans to launch a mega initiative in September to have only local teachers in Maldives’ education system, says President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

He made the announcement in his address at the Independence Day function on Friday night.

In his address, President Muizzu noted that it was one of his pledges to change the entire school system to local teachers.

“God willing, we will begin a mega initiative in September to have only Maldivian teachers in Maldives’ education system,” he said. “God willing, we will see a country of the Maldivian people in the true sense of the word.”

President Muizzu said that the government has received MVR 9 million in grants to develop the country’s education sector.

“A lot will be done with this. All Maldivian students want to complete higher secondary education. This is something that all families want. This has been introduced in an additional 23 schools in 23 islands,” he said.

President Muizzu said that the most frequent request he received during his tours to islands was the appeal to have air conditioning in schools.

He said that the government has launched an initiative to install air conditioning systems in all public schools.

The revival of the spirit of nationalism was one of his biggest electoral pledges.

“We want our children to grow up with a love for their country. God willing, we are engaged in a lot of effort in the area of nationalism,” he said.

President Muizzu said that as part of these efforts, nationalism is now taught as a subject in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, and the national anthem is recited in school assemblies.
