As pledged to N. Maafaru residents during his presidential campaign, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Monday, has returned Farumuli and Kan’dinmahuraa – two uninhabited islands in Noonu Atoll – to the jurisdiction of Maafaru.

A decree signed by the President was published on the government gazette on Sunday.

The decree states both islands have been declared under the jurisdiction of Maafaru.

Two uninhabited islands in the large Maafaru lagoon – Bah’thijehi and Farumuli – had previously been under the jurisdiction of Maafaru. But when the jurisdictions of administrative constituencies of councils was decided in 2020 under presidential decree, Maafaru lost an 80-hector area from its lagoon, including the two uninhabited islands.

This promoted concerns from Maafaru Council and residents which prompted the pledge by President Muizzu during his campaign.
