By-elections to coincide parliamentary election

The by-elections to elect council members of three local islands will coincide with this year's parliamentary elections, reported the Elections Commission (EC) on Sunday, March 01, 2024.

EC Vice President Ismail Habeeb said via X, said that no election can be held during Ramadan according to the fifth amendment of the General Act on Elections. 

Since any election required to be held during Ramadan, should be held during the last 10 days of the Islamic sacred month, the three council by-elections have been postponed as well.

The by-election to elect one female member for Haa Alifu atoll Thakandhoo council, previously scheduled for March 17, the by-election of Meemu atoll Maduvvari council scheduled for March 30, and Noonu atoll Velidhoo by-election; have all been postponed to April 21, 2024.

The by-elections will commence from 08:00 until 16:00. Ballot boxes will be opened for vote counting after 16:30.

Previously, EC President Fuad Thowfeek said the by-elections have been scheduled for April 21 since it coincides with the 11the day after Ramadan concludes.

He added that the date was fixed to ensure the new parliament assembly is elected before the current assembly reaches one month before conclusion.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday announced the election date would be a public holiday as per the request of EC.
