Maldivian couple arrested for smuggling drugs via air transport

A young Maldivian couple who traveled to the Maldives via air has been arrested on suspicion of smuggling drugs.

As per the Criminal Court’s order, the arrestees have been identified as a 27-year-old man from Male’ City and a 20-year-old woman from HDh. Nellaidhoo.

The court order dated Wednesday, citing Police, said a large number of drugs were discovered from the couple’s luggage upon arrival in the Maldives.

It was also noted that the urine samples collected from the couple tested positive for COC, THC and Benzo.

Criminal Court has remanded both of them in custody for 15 days.

They are suspected of attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives using a special tactic among other crimes. The court order states the couple has claimed that they had been carrying the luggage at the request of someone else, adding that it is highly suspected that the case involves additional culprits.
