Two councilors in Male’ City Council have resigned in order to assume posts in the new government.
As per the City Council, the two councilors who resigned are Central Henveiru Councilor Adam Rameez and South Maafannu Councilor Abdulla Nasir.
Both individuals are close acquaintances of President Elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. They worked closely alongside Muizzu during his campaign and throughout the transitional phase.
Rameez resigned from PPM earlier this year after he was investigated by the party for possible misconduct.
Rameez reportedly came under fire after he allegedly began secretly campaigning for Muizzu instead of PPM’s initial candidate former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and advocated for Muizzu to contest the election on PPM’s ticket.
Muizzu contested the election on PNC’s ticket after Yameen was deemed ineligible to contest the election by the Supreme Court in light of his prison conviction.
While individuals prepare to assume senior posts in the incoming government – political appointees and heads of state-owned companies in the outgoing government are tendering their resignations.
