1,249 people have applied to join the training program conducted by the Transport Ministry which will offer the chance for cancellation of traffic fines.

During the presidential election campaign last month, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced the decision to waive all outstanding traffic fines between November 17, 2018 and September 5, 2023.

But the cancellation of fines is subject to the completion of a 20-hour training program on traffic rules.

Applications for the program closed on Wednesday.

State Minister for Transport Ali Solih told Sun on Thursday that the program received a high number of applications.

He said that the applicants will be shortlisted based on the reasons for the traffic fines.

Solih said the 20-hour training program will be conducted over the course of a week.

The program will be conducted in collaboration with the police.
