The Democrats has officially commenced their political works at the former main party centre of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) located at Artificial Beach area in Male’.
Saif Fathih, North Galolhu councillor in Male’ City Council, told Sun on Thursday that the party centre was inaugurated sometime last night. He detailed that political events and gatherings of the party will be held at the centre in the future.
MDP’s main party centre, MDP Haruge, is located on a land owned by Shafiyya Zubair, one of the party’s former senior activists. During the great divide of the party, Shafiyya sided with MDP’s leader, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
The party received notice from the landowner to vacate the premises last April.
‘The Democrats’ seized MDP's main party centre to establish their own party centre at the premise on May 30th.
MDP sought an injunction from the Civil Court to halt their eviction claiming Shafiyya had verbally agreed to let MDP continue their political activities at the party centre till the end of the upcoming presidential election. The court documents submitted by MDP read that the agreement was reached during an exchange held over the phone.
They were denied the injunction by the court citing there were no legal grounds to issue an injunction due to the lack of a legally binding agreement between the parties.
