Alaika Adnan and Hussain Firushan have been assigned to temporarily head The Democrats following the resignation of the party’s leader Hassan Latheef and deputy leader Mohamed Shifaz (Shippe).
According to the party’s constitutions, if the post of the party’s leader becomes vacant, the post shall be assumed by a deputy leader of the party. Both Aaika and Firushan are deputy leaders of the party.
An official from Democrats confirmed to Sun that discussions are underway regarding the appointment of a new leader to the party.
A senior official from Democrats told Sun that they are unaware that Hassan Latheef has resigned from the party despite his resignation as the party’s leader.
Latheef resignation comes after the resignation of Hussain Amr, who was the party’s running mate during the last presidential elections. Amr had left the party and rejoined Maldives Democratic Party (MDP).
Rumors claim that more senior officials from Democrats are set to rejoin MDP.
The Democrats was formed by a breakaway faction from MDP that supports former president Mohamed Nasheed, following ideological differences.
