Hassan Latheef has resigned as the President of The Democrats along with Deputy President Mohamed Shifaz resigning from his party role as well.

The Democrats was founded by former President Mohamed Nasheed and his allies who all exited Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) following a fall out between Nasheed and former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

A senior official of The Democrats, while speaking with ‘Sun’ confirmed that though Hassan has resigned from the party’s leadership role, it is uncertain if he has exited the party entirely.

Unlike Hassan, whose exit from The Democrats is uncertain, the Deputy President has formally exited the party as well, confirmed the official.

While two of The Democrats’ leaders have resigned from their held posts, rumors have spread that several key members of the party are preparing to join MDP.

It has been reported that besides Shifaz, former MP Ali Azim has exited The Democrats to join the ranks of MDP.

In response, Shifaz said he has not officially joined any parties, but will be seeking other avenues to hold the government accountable.

“I am required to look at the most viable option through which I can hold the government accountable,” Shifaz commented.

With the top brass of The Democrats rumored to be exiting the party, it was reported on Friday evening that Hussain Amr, the former STO Managing Director and the party’s running mate in the last presidential election, has rejoined MDP.

Activities of The Democrats have stagnated as of late, while the party faced defeat without securing a single seat at the most recent parliamentary election as well.
