PNC deputy leader alleges some MPs involved in drug trade

Some of the incumbent MPs are involved in the drug trade in Maldives, alleges People’s National Congress (PNC) deputy leader and Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef Umar.

Adam Shareef, who had served as Defense Minister during President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration, made the allegation in a tweet Tuesday evening.

In the tweet, Adam Shareef said that stopping the drug trade in Maldives requires sincere efforts by politicians and leaders.

“It’s a well-known fact that some MPs and politicians are involved in dealing drugs,” he said.

Adam Shareef urged the public against voting for such individuals.

“Don’t vote for them! Select someone who cannot be compromised!” he said.

Speaking to Sun, Adam Shareef noted that drugs is an issue which had plagued Maldives for decades.

The drugs which were previously smuggled into Maldives in small quantities are now smuggled in in alarmingly high quantities, he said.

Adam Shareef said drugs have become a large-scale trade in Maldives, ruining its youth and children.

Solving this issue requires enforcing the punishments prescribed by law on everyone involved in the drug trade, without distinction, he said.

Maldivian authorities have seized 1.6 tonnes of drugs in various operations over the last four years. And according to Maldives Correctional Service, drug offenders make up for 70 percent of Maldives’ prison population.
