The family of the GDh. Hoadedhoo man who died in police custody in late October continues to express concern over the delay in autopsy results.
Abdulla Rasheed, 43, was arrested in a counter-drug operation from a café near the harbor of GDh. Hoadedhdhoo at approximately 02:15 pm on October 25. The police hired a private speedboat to transport him to another island. He died en route.
According to the family, Abdulla had repeatedly complained of chest pains when the police had him board the boat, and the officers there dismissed it as an act and denied him medical treatment.
His body was transported to India for an autopsy to determine the cause of death on October 31, despite protests from his family, who wished to have him buried as soon as possible. They made an unsuccessful attempt to halt the autopsy by filing a case with the Civil Court.
His body was flown back home and buried on November 5.
Abdulla’s uncle, Mohamed Shareef told Sun on Monday that the police have yet to share any information regarding the results of the autopsy, over two weeks since it was conducted.
Shareef said that the police said back then that the preliminary autopsy results would be available when the body was released.
“We are in the dark about his death. Our question is why haven’t they shared the preliminary results when autopsy was done against our wishes, and at great expense to the state. Police said the preliminary result would be available with the body, and that it could take up to five months for the final report,” he said.
Shareef said the family was also unhappy about the lack of support from the state for three of Abdulla’s children, who are under the age of 18 years.
The family has repeatedly accused the police of negligence in Abdulla’s death.
He asked for the police to share the results of the autopsy without making any changes, and to conduct a full investigation into Abdulla’s death.
