Police face charges for negligence in Abdulla Rasheed’s death

The National Integrity Commission (NIC) has concluded the police had been criminally negligent in the death of Abdulla Rasheed, a man from GDh. Hoadedhdhoo who died in police custody in October 2022, and asked the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) to file charges with the court.

Abdulla, 43, was arrested in a counter-drug operation from a café near the harbor of Hoadedhdhoo at approximately on October 25, 2022. The police hired a private speedboat to transport him to another island. He died en route.

Sun has been informed that the NIC concluded in its report that the police had been negligent, and is seeking charges against police officers involved in Abdulla’s arrest.

According to this family, Abdulla had repeatedly complained of chest pains when the police had him board the boat, and the officers there dismissed it as an act and denied him medical treatment.

His body was transported to India for an autopsy to determine the cause of death on October 31, 2022, despite protests from his family, who wished to have him buried as soon as possible. They made an unsuccessful attempt to halt the autopsy by filing a case with the Civil Court.

His body was flown back home and buried on November 5, 2022.
