City Council accuses govt. of halting efforts to mitigate flooding in Carnival area

The Male’ City Council has accused the current administration of halting efforts initiated by the previous administration to mitigate the damage to the Alimas Carnival area from tidal flooding.

Swell waves hit Male’ City on Saturday, flooding the Alimas Carnival area and neighboring streets.

When questioned by Sun regarding the city council’s plans to prevent flood damage, Central Henveiru Councilor Adam Rameez said former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration had initiated a project to install boulder rocks in the area, and that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration had halted the project.

“The current administration has halted the project by the previous administration to install boulder rocks there. If they hadn’t stopped it, if they had installed the boulder rocks, the area wouldn’t have experienced the damage it has today,” he said.

Extensive flooding at the Alimas Carnival on Saturday forced the closure of the ground floor of the Dolphin Café, and damaged vehicles parked in the area.

City Council said they will begin the clean up as soon as the flooding stops.

The City Council has built a wall outside the King Salman Mosque to mitigate the impact of the swell waves.
