Guraidhoo floods, six residences shifted to shelters

Locals of six residences in Kaafu atoll Guraidhoo have been shifted to temporary shelters following heavy floods.

Guraidhoo Island Coucil's Deputy President Ibrahim Shaleez confirmed several houses were damaged in the heavy rainfall on Monday evening.

"We shifted people from six houses to local guesthouses last night, since it the houses are not in liveable conditions," Shaleez commented.

The council's deputy said raining began around 19:30hrs on Monday evening and continued without stopping until 22:00hrs.

"We have noted more than 50 houses already while the flooding is extreme," he added.

Shaleez recalled a similar crisis back on December 31st, 2023 due to heavy rainfall. Multiple houses had sustained damages during the incident as well.

He added the property damages from Monday's flooding has been more extreme than last year's.

Shaleez further confirmed flood waters have been fully drained from the island around 01:00hrs on Tuesday early hours, with the help of council and MNDF.

Maldives is experiencing varying degrees of rainfall across the country. Meanwhile, there have been cases of flooding reported from Male' City and other atolls, including damages to over 40 houses in Addu atoll Feydhoo recently.
