Vaavu Atoll council has signed an agreement to develop a floating resort on the atoll.
Speaking with Sun on Monday, President of Vaavu Atoll Council Shujaau Ali said that the council has signed an agreement with local company Lewini Hotels to discuss and make decisions on things related to developing the resort.
From the council, Shujaau signed the agreement while from Lewini Hotels the company’s Vice President Dr Varisa Limsakul, and Managing Director Abdulla Rasheed.
Shujaau said that the company has expressed interest in such a project, hence under the joint-venture business rights granted to the council from Decentralization Act, the agreement was signed.
Furthermore, he said that under this agreement, within 36 months, physical work on the floating resort will commence. He added that areas have been marked to develop the resort as well.
“They will now research the marked areas.”
In addition to this, Shujaau said that discussions have been ongoing with revenant ministries for about a year.
Shujaau expressed that a typical resort will no longer garner any progress in the tourism industry of the atoll.
“The resorts operated in the atoll are of guest house standard. If any progress is to come to tourism of the atoll, a resort of innovative thinking need to be brought.”
