Home Minister Imran Abdulla states the Juvenile Detention Center opened at the Asseyri Prison in K. Hinmafushi on Sunday is an important step under the government’s efforts to achieve a permanent solution to the issue of juvenile offenders.
The establishment of the Juvenile Detention Center was mandated under the Juvenile Justice Act passed in 2019.
The center was opened by Imran in a ceremony on Sunday evening.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Imran said the center was an important step in the government’s efforts to provide a permanent solution to the issue of juvenile delinquency in Maldives.
“Under the policy adopted by the government upon assuming office to solve the issue of juvenile offenders, of the centers mandated under law no. 18/2019, we, today, have opened the detention facility. I believe we have established a center that meets all legal requirements, is in par with international standards, and is suitable to house and rehabilitate juvenile offenders,” he said.
Imran said that regulations have been set and officers trained to run the center.
Imran said he hoped the center provides positive results in solving the issue of juvenile delinquency.
