The total number of COVID-19 cases confirmed from the island of B. Eydhafushi has increased to 123.
Eydhafushi was placed under monitoring mechanisms on April 19, after the detection of cases on the island.
The B. Atoll Hospital, located in Eydhafushi stated last night that so far 913 samples had been collected from the island for the virus out of which 123 tests returned as positive.
58 samples collected yesterday saw 14 positive cases with 41 samples still pending. Most of these samples were collected through random sampling while the other samples were collected from the Flu Clinic on the island.
The hospital stated that a decision had been taken to collect random samples from the island as the situation worsened. The source of the virus to the island still remains unclear, however, a lot of people traveled to the island for the recently held local council elections.
Eydhafushi Council had previously stated that there were two main scenarios of how the virus reached the populous island. One was by a voter who traveled from Male' City for the elections after travel easements were introduced by the health authorities and the other was through the crew of a speedboat that travels between the island and Male' City.
