Eydhafushi imposes movement restrictions, closes non-essential businesses

The B. Eydhafushi COVID-19 taskforce, on Monday, made the decision to ban public gatherings and impose other movement restrictions following a spike in virus cases in the country.

The taskforce ordered a cease in all activities which facilitate gatherings, effective 18:00 hours on Monday.

As such, teashops, restaurants, cafes and other such businesses have been ordered to cease in-house dining and takeaway services, and to offer only delivery services.

Residents have been instructed to cease visiting shops, and to have food and other supplies delivered to their homes.

Hair salons have also been closed indefinitely and lounging in chairs in public spaces within the islands has been banned.

Residents have also been instructed to stay at home except for access to essential services, and in cases where venturing out becomes unavoidable, for only the person who needs access to an essential service to venture out, and for others to remain home.

Fishermen have been instructed to report to the social support desk before embarking on fishing trips.

Residents have been advised to call the flu clinic established at the B. Atoll Hospital at 6608309 if they exhibit any flu-symptoms.

The restrictions come amid a spike in virus cases in the populous Maldivian capital, Male’ City. The first case was identified on April 15, since which the cases in the city have risen to 49. While several clusters have been found, they have not been traced back to an index patient. Health authorities now estimate the community spread had gone undetected for at least two to three weeks.

One residential island outside of the capital, H. A. Uligan has also confirmed a virus case – a person who had returned to Uligan following a recent visit to Male’.

The total number of people who have tested positive nationwide now stands at 69.
