The Environment Ministry has stated that more than 40 islands had requested assistance over water shortages faced due to the current period of hot weather the country is experiencing.

A total of 48 islands had requested the Environment Ministry for assistance and the Ministry has so far responded and assisted 27 islands.

The islands that made the requests included islands in H.A, H.Dh, Sh, N, R, B, Lh, A.A, A.Dh, Th, L, and G.Dh.

Environment Minister Dr. Hussain Rasheed, speaking with “Sun” said that the water shortages faced were a common issue during the hot season.

“Not all islands in the country have a portable water source. If water is not stored during the rainy season, it is very likely the island may face shortages.” said the Minister.

A program was run to address the issue, and the water shortages are reported by island councils to which the Ministry would respond and assist the islands.

“This is not a sudden issue, We conduct this program every year.” said the Minister.
