Maldivian government has allocated MVR 8 million from the grant assistance provided by India towards coastal protection of A. A. Rasdhoo.

The funds were allocated under the grant assistance of USD 6.93 million (MVR 106 million) signed-off by India to Maldives for socio-economic projects during Indian External Affairs Sushma Swaraj’s visit to Maldives from March 17-18.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which announced the allocation of funds for the Rasdhoo project last Friday, says the project will provide necessary coastal protection to an area stretching 179 meters in length which currently faces severe coastal erosion.

The area in question was previously used as a landfill. The severe coastal erosion affecting Rasdhoo has resulted in the waste buried in the landfill rising to the surface, contaminating water resources and polluting the beach area.

Funds from the USD 6.93 grant assistance by India have now been allocated for multiple projects - all of which will be managed by local authorities.
