President Solih attends the 14th summit of OIC

Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has attended the 14th high-level summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The summit began last Friday in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

The purpose of the summit – held evert three years – is to facilitate collaboration among Muslim countries, for the benefit of the global Muslim community, whilst promoting the values and principles of the religion of Islam.

The summit is also an opportunity for leaders of Muslim majority countries to offer share the grievances of the respective countries, and offer their perspectives, and solutions regarding various issues facing separate countries and the Islamic Ummah as a whole.

President’s Office reports that in his statement at the summit, President Solih highlighted that Maldives was consistent in its advocacy on behalf of Muslims everywhere, referring to its continued support for the Palestinian cause and frequent condemnation of anti-Islamic bigotry, as demonstrable examples.

He also emphasized that tasks confronting the Islamic Ummah were immense, and need for collaboration between Muslim countries to successfully meet the challenges.

Issues discussed at this year’s summit includes the growing prevalence of Islamophobia, regional security in the Middle East and of the growing threat posed by extremists.

President Solih was accompanied to Mecca for the summit by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid; and Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Zahir Ali.
