President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday announced the decision to introduce a National Engineers’ Award next year, to recognize contributions of engineers to the nation.
President Muizzu had announced the decision to designate August 30 as National Engineers’ Day back in June, is a nod to the biggest infrastructure development project in the Maldives’ history, the bridge linking the capital Male’ City with Hulhumale’ and Hulhule’, where the Velana International Airport is located.
He announced the decision to introduce a national award for engineers on Saturday morning, in his address on occasion of the inaugural National Engineers’ Day.
In his address, President Muizzu extended greetings and appreciation to all engineers serving across diverse sectors.
Reflecting on the transformative impact of the Sinamale’ Bridge on the social and economic life of Maldivians over the past seven years, President Muizzu underscored the pivotal role of engineers in realizing his administration’s vision of making the Maldives a developed nation by 2040, advancing digitalization, and achieving renewable energy goals.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding opportunities for academic research, education, and training in engineering fields, alongside giving recognition through the National Engineers’ Award.

President Muizzu highlighted the ingenuity and innovation of Maldivian ancestors, commenting that present-day engineers continue this legacy by driving national progress.
He concluded his address with a prayer for a golden era of prosperity for the Maldives.
The 1.4-kilometer Sinamale’ Bridge opened on August 30, 2018, during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration.
The USD 200 million project was primarily funded by the Chinese government, with a combination of a USD 116 million grant and a USD 72 million loan, along with a USD 12 million contribution from the Maldivian government.
The project was overseen by President Muizzu, who was serving as Housing Minister at the time.
