The Homeland Security Ministry on Tuesday published new regulations that tighten the rules for import of types of knives, including flick knives and butterfly knives, that authorities say are commonly used in gang fights and assaults.
According to the ministry, the new rules seek to establish strong regulations for the import of sharp instruments such as knives, and ensure public safety. They were formulated under new anti-gang laws that took effect on Tuesday.
Under the new rules, the import of types such as flick knives or switchblades and butterfly knives require a special permit from the Homeland Security Ministry. The permit will only be issued to people above the age of 18 years, and applications will be subject to an MVR 1,000 administrative fee.
Knives that are imported without ministry approval will be subject to confiscation by Maldives Customs, and prompt a criminal investigation by the police.
Meanwhile, the sale of knives to a minor will be subject to hefty fines of MVR 20,000 to MVR 100,000.
Under the new rules, the use of knives imported with special permission from the ministry must be restricted to the use declared in the application form.
Meanwhile, the ministry will be maintaining a record of the items.
