President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on Wednesday that seaplane services to Alif Alif Thoddoo will be launched in February of next year.
The announcement was made during his visit to North Ari Atoll, where he addressed the residents of Thoddoo.
President Muizzu emphasized that a key priority for the government is to enhance the economic activities of the islands. He highlighted Thoddoo's established position in both agriculture and tourism, noting that approximately 80 tourist businesses are currently operational on the island. The President expressed optimism for increasing the number of tourism beds in the future.
To further promote tourism, President Muizzu stated that the government would exert all efforts, including the introduction of seaplane services. "A dedicated seaplane platform and facilities will be established for the island. Seaplane schedules will start from February next year," he confirmed.
The President anticipates that the new seaplane service will alleviate concerns among tourists regarding disruptions to their trips, often caused by inclement weather and rough seas. Thoddoo is a popular local tourism destination, attracting a significant number of visitors.
Beyond tourism, agriculture stands as Thoddoo's primary source of income, with the island particularly renowned for its watermelons. Demand for watermelons traditionally peaks during the month of Ramadan.
Seaplane services in the Maldives have predominantly catered to resorts in the past. However, efforts are now underway to initiate scheduled flights to local tourism destinations. This initiative follows the recent launch of seaplane service in Kamadhoo, Baa Atoll, in partnership with Hawks, during the President's visit last week.
