Addu accident: Minor crashed while trying to evade police in panic

Maldives Police Service states the accident on Heenaa Magu in Addu City’s Hithadhoo district last night occurred when the minor, who was driving one of the motorcycles involved, attempted to flee in panic after noticing police officers.

An accident involving a collision between two motorcycles on Heenaa Magu in Addu City’s Hithadhoo district was reported to the Police at approximately 21:17pm on Sunday night.

In a message to the media on Sunday, Police said one of the motorcycles involved in the accident was driven by a woman while the other was driven by a 15-year-old boy, with another 16-year-old in the back.

All three of them sustained injuries in the accident and were treated at Addu Equatorial Hospital.

Police, on Monday, responded to rumors that the accident was a result of a collision with a police motorcycle. In this regard, a Police spokesperson said their investigations so far do not indicate any police vehicle was linked to the accident.

The Spokesperson detailed that the accident occurred when the minor took an overturn in panic after noticing a police vehicle and crashed onto the motorcycle being driven by the woman.

Notably, there has recently been a rise in accidents involving minors driving motorcycles.

On August 6, a 17-year-old boy died after crashing into a wall while riding a motorcycle in Fuvahmulah City. On July 13, a 17-year-old boy was killed in a crash with a pickup in capital Male’ City. The accident also resulted in injuries to two others including a 16-year-old boy.

According to police statistics, 2,885 accidents were reported last year while 1,725 accidents have been reported so far this year.
