A young man living in a flat within Sifainge Co-operative (SIFCO) Hiyaa, housing designated for armed forces personnel, has been apprehended in connection with a drug case.

The Criminal Court on Sunday issued an arrest warrant for the 23-year-old man on charges of possession and trafficking of alcohol and drugs.

While the court order affirmed that sufficient evidence had been presented to substantiate the allegations, the investigating officer informed the closed courtroom that a substantial quantity of suspected drugs had been seized from the accused's residence and another location linked to him.

Drug packaging equipment was also discovered at both sites, according to the officer. The accused admitted to the items found at his residence but asserted that the items discovered in the second location had no connection to him.

The Criminal Court ruled that the youth should be remanded in custody for a period of 15 days.

Construction of the SIFCO flats for army officers in Hulhumale commenced in 2013. The project experienced various delays, with keys to the flats finally handed over to the army in September 2023.

The three towers will collectively comprise 691 apartments, with 330 units reserved for the army. The project features 1,100 sqft three-bedroom apartments.
