10 nominated for BroadCom membership, including Zeena

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has submitted the names of 10 candidates for the vacant seat at the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom).

One of the seats in the seven-member BroadCom was vacated in March following the resignation of the commission’s then-vice president Ibrahim Fazeen in face of a no-confidence motion against him at the Parliament over a sexual misconduct allegation.

The President’s Office opened applications for the vacancy on April 6.

President Muizzu’s letter, in which he names 10 candidates who qualify for the role - ranked based on his preference - was read at the Parliament on Wednesday morning.

Among the candidates are former managing director of Public Service Media (PSM) Zeena Zahir, who resigned from the role for undisclosed reasons on August 23, 2024, after less than a year on the job.

However, she is ranked fifth on the list.

The candidates:

  • Ali Yoosuf, Baaranaa, Lh. Hinnavaru

  • Zam’ath Ahmed Waheed, Mala, GDh. Thinadhoo
  • Mohamed Shameem, H. Pretty Villa, K. Male’
  • Shimla Mohamed, Aastralge, S. Hithadhoo
  • Fathimath Zaeema, Orchidumaage, Sh. Feevah

The candidates will be vetted by the Parliament’s Independent Institutions Committee.

BroadCom currently has six members. They are:

  • Safa Shafeeq, president
  • Shifla Ibrahim, vice president
  • Aminath Ameena
  • Mohamed Abdulla
  • Aminath Nuzuha
  • Aminath Sarahath Izzath
