President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Wednesday, inspected the progress of the new temporary building being developed to house Criminal and Drug Courts.
The new building is aimed at alleviating the current space constraints faced by the courts until the Superior Court Complex in Hulhumalé is completed.
During Wednesday’s visit, the President examined the plans for the building and received updates from several senior officials from the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), as well as the Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muthalib. He was accompanied by cabinet ministers, senior judicial officials and other government representatives.
While delivering the presidential address this year back in February, President Muizzu highlighted that delays in hearings and issuing verdicts as the greatest challenges faced by the judicial system.
He said the new Hulhumalé Superior Court Complex is aimed at addressing these issues, with the President pledging to commence its construction within the year.
Prior to this, President Muizzu has stated the new temporary building for Criminal Court would be completed by April.
