President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has sought parliamentary approval to appoint non-resident ambassadors to the Russian Federation and the Kingdom of Morrocco.

A letter from the President nominating two individuals for these posts was read out during Monday’s parliamentary sitting. In this regard, he nominated:

Incumbent Ambassador of Maldives to Türkiye, former of Chief of Defense Force Lieutenant General (Retired) Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef as Non-Resident Ambassador of Maldives to Russia

Incumbent Ambassador of Maldives to Saudi Arabia Ahmed Sareer as Non-Resident Ambassador of Maldives to Morocco

The matter has been forwarded to the Foreign Relations Committee for review.

Abdul Raheem who served as the Vice Chief of Defense Force during the last administration was promoted to Chief of Defense Force after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office on November 17, 2023.

However, he retired from military service after 39 years when he turned 60: the maximum age allowed under the law to remain in military service.

Sareer has extensive experience in the field of foreign relations, having previously served as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations and the ambassador of Maldives to various nations.

The Parliament recently approved his appointment as non-residential ambassador to Kuwait and Egypt and as Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the Organization of Islamic Corporation (OIC).
